Two big Division I teams met in the north county tonight, the Vista Panthers from the always strong Avocado League, and your Eastern League Mira Mesa Marauders. Last year's meeting ended in a 21-21 tie. Both squads, the coaches, and everyone in the stands knew this was going to be a tough game. Vista has a big, strong, hard-charging offense with talented running backs and a powerful O-Line that can push you downfield at will, a TD threat on each and every down. Their defense is equally as big, and tough, and early on it was clear that the Panthers had come to protect their home turf. The Marauders came into this game with nothing but respect for the Panthers, and I'm sure the feeling was mutual. Their meetings over the past few seasons have been nothing less than fierce battles in the trenches, punctuated by explosive running games by both sides, and aerial combat, with long ball victories that swung the flow of the game from one side to the other. Victory, no matter what the score, was ever a certainty. And tonight was no exception. There were big players on both teams making big plays. There was a lot of heart on the field tonight; players going ironman, trainers working on one guy after another to work the cramps out of tired legs in the heat, nonames and big names stepping up and doing the job. No one left this game early. The lights on the scoreboard, which were flickering all night, could have gone completely out, the score didn't matter, what did was the game on the field.
The Marauders left the game with nothing but respect for the Panthers...Victory formation...Cann took a knee....the final seconds ticked off the clock...both squads crossed the line....shook hands with their opposite numbers..."Nice game, see ya' in the playoffs..."

When you've got nowhere else to go...you go up-and-over
Marauder's Wide Receiver, #4 Markques
Simas,
comes back upfield to make a great catch on an O'Mary pass,
but then has to go up-and-over
the Vista defender to avoid several would be tacklers.
